FUT: the technique most clinics quietly dropped
Only 7 of the 22 clinics in our ten-city index state that they offer FUT (strip) surgery. That scarcity is information: an FUE-only practice cannot offer you the strip alternative even when an evaluation would favor it, and it cannot give you the two-quote price comparison. Why scarcity changes the consultation
A practice can only recommend from its own menu. When 15 of 22 clinics are FUE-only, "FUE is right for you" is the only possible answer at most consultations — which makes the both-technique practices structurally more informative, whatever you ultimately choose. Why would anyone choose FUT when FUE has no linear scar?
Four reasons practices and the literature still cite: larger single sessions from the same donor supply, no need to shave the donor area, donor-supply strategy over a lifetime of progressive loss, and price — FUT typically prices below FUE, because strip dissection concentrates the labor differently. The linear scar is the trade. An evaluation should weigh your donor characteristics and long-term plan, not just scar preference.
Is FUT being phased out?
From marketing, largely; from medicine, no. Only 7 of 22 clinics in our index state they offer it, and several FUE-only practices position against “older strip methods”. But the technique remains standard in the literature for the right candidate — which creates a structural problem: most clinics can no longer offer you the comparison, and a practice cannot recommend what it does not sell.
