Physician-performed: the clinics that say the doctor does the surgery
The single strongest filter patients apply to hair transplant clinics is “does the surgeon actually perform the surgery?” Of the 22 clinics in our ten-city index, 10 state some form of physician-performed care — but only one states the physician “personally performs every step”. The formulations differ, and the differences are the product. Every wording below is quoted from the clinic's own site, checked August 2026.

“Overseen by” and “supervised by” are disclosure — better than silence — but they are not “performed by”. One practice describes roles two different ways on different pages; bring both quotes to the consultation.
Clinics where roles are not specified
Higdon Plastic Surgery (Nashville) · Beeson Cosmetic Surgery (Indianapolis) · Richmond Surgical Arts (Richmond) · pēkomd (Columbus market) — five clinics whose reviewed pages do not say who performs the surgical steps. Not a red flag by itself; it simply moves the question to the consultation, unanswered.

Common questions
Why does “who performs the surgery” matter so much?
Because a hair transplant is thousands of individual surgical decisions — recipient-site angles, extraction depth, graft handling — and outcomes follow the hands that make them. The ISHRS consumer campaign exists specifically because patients discover after the fact that technicians, not the surgeon they consulted, performed their procedure. All staffing models are legal; the issue is knowing what you are buying before you pay.
Does “physician-performed stated” mean the doctor really does everything?
No — it means the clinic’s own website says so, in the words we quote. Wording strength varies enormously: “personally performs every step” is one clinic; “physician-led” with a team is another; “overseen by” is supervision, not performance. We quote each formulation verbatim so you can judge, and the consultation question that settles it is: who harvests, who makes recipient sites, who places grafts — on my case, by name.
Is technician-performed surgery bad?
Experienced technician teams are integral to almost every hair transplant — graft dissection and placement are commonly technician work even at surgeon-led practices. The ISHRS position is that donor harvesting and recipient-site creation should be performed by a licensed physician or physician extender, and that patients should be told exactly who does what. The problem is not technicians; it is not knowing.
